What is an Astigmatism?

Many eye doctors agree that many people have some degree of astigmatism, but might not even notice it if it’s mild. An astigmatism is an irregularly shaped cornea. The normal shape of the cornea should be round like a basketball. This allows the light rays to properly enter the eye which allows you to see an image that is clear and crisp.

Astigmatism is a common eye condition

A person with astigmatism the cornea  is shaped more like a football which causes the light to focus on two points instead of one. This causes blurred or distorted vision at all distances both near and far.  Severe astigmatism can cause blurred vision, squinting, eye fatigue and even headaches because the eye is constantly straining to try and see clearly.

Astigmatism is common and can be easily treated.  As a eye doctor in San Jose we see many patients with some form of astigmatism.

Astigmatism can be easily corrected

If the astigmatism is mild it probably doesn’t need to be treated.  A more advanced astigmatism can be corrected through eye glasses or contact lenses.  Both soft and rigid lenses work well for correcting astigmatism.  Soft lenses called torics are made of gel like plastic and have a special correction built into them.  If your astigmatism is more severe you may need rigid lenses ( RGP ) or eye glasses.

Corrective eye surgery is also an option that can work very well for correcting astigmatism.  Through a comprehensive eye exam your optometrist will be able to recommend the best option for you.

Does your practice resurface RGP lenses? If so, what is the cost for this service? If not, do you have any suggestions of where I can get this done?

Hi Angie, we do not resurface RPG lenses. Unfortunately not too many optometry practices do this. Probably the best way is to Google it. Dr. Ngo
